So many trauma victims feel trapped because of their thoughts. They may suffer from flashbacks or get triggered when certain painful memories arise. In a way, their trauma locks them inside a mental prison that is impossible to escape.

Healing from trauma is not quick, and it is a process that takes time. Even so, it can be done, and the best way to start is by daring to believe that by focusing on your Self, you can begin to see some improvement.

What is the Self?

The Self, or the True Self, is who you are as a person when you take every other part of you away, internally. Your Self is what is listening to your internal thoughts and emotions, whether they are positive or negative. Most importantly, it is set apart from them, and this aspect is extremely important when it comes to healing from trauma.

You may not have even known that your Self existed before now. It’s easy for it to get swept aside because of the extreme emotions and beliefs that you may have. Have you ever been so involved in an activity that it seemed as though all the cares in the world just faded away? If so, then you’ve been able to catch a glimpse of your Self.

This might be difficult to hear, but that person is who you really are. Your Self is what relates to your other “parts,” which is what we’ll talk about next.

What are Your Parts?

The emotions and thoughts you have are highly misunderstood. They actually come from your “parts,” which are really internal personalities that everyone has. For example, when you experience fear, it can come as an overwhelming sense of foreboding and angst. But it’s really a lot more than that.

If you were to separate your Self from the “part” of fear, you could learn about it and not allow it to engulf you. For instance, you might learn that fear is really something you put into place as a way to protect your Self. You might also learn that fear:

  • Protects the other “parts” that cannot protect themselves.
  • Is a result of painful events that you have experienced and memories that have not been properly filed away.
  • Is not just fear, but that it is also sadness and anger.
  • Believes it has to be there because there is no other way for you to cope.

If your Self listens carefully enough, fear will even tell you how to help it not have to work so hard.
